Call for Papers

Invitation

The overuse of natural resources for economic growth and development has damaged the environment and decreased their availability and affordability. The circular economy presents new ways to develop a more sustainable growth model, and the idea is becoming increasingly popular worldwide. Most efforts have focused on preventing waste generation by these actors, without exploring the opportunities waste utilization could create. What hinders this shift, and the discovery of new opportunities, is the dependency of individual companies on other micro- and macro-level markets, which must also be redesigned to support circular principles. These markets need to be redesigned, including organized structures such as eco-clusters, eco-industrial parks, and symbiotic business networks, where one entity’s waste waste becomes another’s resource. These emerging markets encounter several economic, social, legal, and administrative barriers and opportunities.

This Symposium provides an opportunity for those interested in Circular Economy and Sustainability applications at any scale. It covers topics ranging from individual businesses and industrial zones to national, international, and global policies that enable the effective implementation of circular economy principles for Sustainable Development. Researchers, practitioners, and entrepreneurs are invited to submit empirical and theoretical papers on any of the Symposium’s topics. The ultimate goal is to encourage researchers, students, practitioners, and policy makers to examine and discuss  circular economy concepts through a holistic, systemic approach.

A key innovation of this Symposium is the integration of engineering, management, business economics, and sustainable international business knowledge to advance circular and sustainability principles effectively. This brings together theoretical, practical, applied, and managerial expertise to develop efficient strategies and policies.

The symposium will be hosted by the Research Center for Sustainable International Business at the International Business School Maastricht, Zuyd University of Applied Sciences in Maastricht, Netherlands. It is co-organized and co-chaired with the School of Production Engineering and Management at the Technical University of Crete in Greece, along with the Department of Economics and Sustainable Development at Harokopio University of Athens, Greece.
